Groundwork

Groundwork

1993   108hx83w

Technically difficult, this image is constructed in small sections which are fitted together. It is an imaginary ground plan as seen from above. The dominating element is of ridges, suggesting the tilling of soil, radiating out from the pale center. The sections are interconnected and bisected as with irrigation ditches and farm paths. Shapes enlarge and become more generalized as they move toward top and bottom edges. The roughly circular center has a different character, being of lighter value and having details more related to whitewashed habitation than agriculture. The dark margin is a stylized water's edge.
